"I just wanted to tell you that
you have saved my life a number of times. When I was sick
and uninsured, you helped me. When I got work but still had no medical
insurance, you helped me. Now, I can afford to see a private doctor
but the care I got at the Free Clinics was better. There was a stronger
sense of compassion in the care." --Jake, a patient
With
186,000 uninsured San Francisco residents and tens of thousands
more who are underinsured, there is an overwhelming need for free,
quality health care. While services are available to all, Haight
Ashbury Free Clinics primarily serves clients who cannot
access other sources of care: the uninsured and underinsured "working
poor" people who are homeless, youths, and many individuals who
have substance abuse and/or mental health issues.
The Medical Clinics provides urgent care for a
variety of problems including upper respiratory infections, sexually
transmitted diseases, skin conditions and flu symptoms.
By providing
continuity care to persons living with HIV and other chronic illnesses
such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, Haight Ashbury
Free Clinics plays a critical role in providing timely, cost-effective
care to those most in need.
